Note: We are currently updating our financial aid calculators to incorporate MIT’s newly announced financial aid policies.

Paying your bill: Payment deadlines and requirements

Your bill is due at the beginning of each term, and additional incidental charges are billed monthly.

Important deadlines

Most components of the annual student budget, such as tuition, fees, and housing, are billed twice each year.

  • Mid-July: Fall bill is available for viewing
  • August 1: Fall bill is due
  • Mid-December: Spring bill is available for viewing
  • January 2: Spring bill is due

Other deadlines

You are billed monthly on the 10th of the month for any charges that you incur—this may include on-campus housing, meal plans, TechCASH, library fines, lab fees, or medical charges. Payment is always due on the first of the following month.

As a courtesy to our students and their authorized users, we send email reminders each time a billing statement is generated. Student reminders are sent to the official MIT email address on record.

Meeting payment deadlines

When you register for any class at MIT, you agree to the Student Financial Responsibility Agreement, which states that you accept full responsibility for all tuition, fees, and other associated costs01 The fine print: MIT may assess late charges, suspend registration and access to various student services (libraries, dining, computing resources, Institute housing, etc.), withhold a degree, and charge collection costs and fees if all charges are not paid. MIT and its agents and contractors will contact a student using current directory or future contact information, including any cellphone number(s), email address(es), or wireless device(s), regarding a student’s account(s) and/or student loan(s).   incurred as a result of registration.

Please contact your customer service counselor to resolve any unanticipated financial problems.

Returned payments

If your check is returned by your bank, your student account will be charged a $30 fee. You will receive an email from us with the reason your payment was returned. You’ll need to make the necessary changes and send us a new payment.

If you are paying with an electronic payment and it is returned four times, you will no longer be able to make electronic payments and will need to deliver a cashier’s check to us during walk in hours.

Unpaid balance

If you do not make satisfactory arrangements for payment, and the payment deadline has passed, your account will be placed on registration or degree hold, and a hold fee of $100 will be charged. The balance due, including the hold fee, must be paid in full before a hold can be released.

As a courtesy to you and your family, we send notifications throughout the term to students with past due bills who have not made satisfactory arrangements.

Withdrawal

If you leave or withdraw from MIT, you are still responsible for paying the full amount due on your MITPay statement or making satisfactory payment arrangements with the Associate Director for Collections. Should your account be sent to an outside agency, you may be reported to credit bureau agencies and may be responsible for any collection fees, including reasonable attorney’s fees that we incur in such collection efforts.
